The Victoria Project (TVP) was founded in September 2020 by three friends and mothers to raise awareness and increase access to home birth and holistic maternity care in Southern California and beyond.
Janelle is a former certified nurse-midwife and pediatric intensive care nurse. She began advocating for increased access to midwifery care as a student in 2003 to improve maternal-child health outcomes.
Later in life, she was inspired to develop a payment program specifically for midwifery care, which is often excluded from traditional health insurance plans, thus creating a barrier to access. She reached out to her friend and fellow home birth advocate, Deja Rabb, who suggested they connect with Los Angeles-based doula, Haize Hawke. Together the three women founded The Victoria Project in 2020.
Janelle believes in the vital importance of preserving and sharing the knowledge of traditional birth keepers as well as other holistic practitioners. She hopes that TVP will contribute to a cultural shift by offering true choices in maternity care that support the wellbeing of families and practitioners alike.
